Character Information:

Appearance:
Wes looks like he could do some damage. He's tall and has the kind of frame that makes everyone else seem small. He's good at just looming over people, him and his big broad shoulders. He doesn't have the inflated look of a steroid user or the barrel build of a strongman contestant but the powerful, athletic build of a fighter - somebody who can hit hard and run fast and keep going for hours. He's got big paws for hands; large and callused from years of manual labor and more than a few fights and any time he picks something up there's that half second where he looks like he just might break it once he closes his grip. But he's a gentle giant, too, trained for delicate work.

And besides, despite how formidable he is from a physical standpoint, any intimidation based on his size and build is negated slightly by his expressive puppydog eyes and boyish good looks. He has a big, bright smile that lights up his face and makes him look like something of a giant five year old. And that's not really the look one goes for in a city like SANCTUM, so Wes keeps a healthy layer of stubble on his jaw and has learned to master an intimidating scowl among other things to present himself as 'not to be fucked with'.

He generally dresses in a fairly practical and casual manner - jeans, workboots, plain t-shirts or work shirts, a military-style jacket, and a beanie to keep his mop of long brown hair under control.

Personality:
Wes is a good man in a bad place struggling to hold on to those last vestiges of hope and honor and optimism. A man who desperately wants to believe there is good in people, but all too often has to rely on that blade strapped to his back. He's a survivor, but not for himself. He's loyal as a dog, fiercely protective, and even though he has his boyish good looks and a big bright smile and he helps his neighbors carry the groceries upstairs and he offers to fix that flickering light fixture there's blood staining his hands and a deep-rooted anger in him that one would neither expect nor want to witness firsthand. Anger at the hand he and his sister have been dealt. Anger at the corruption suffocating the few good people still left in the city. Anger at everything he's lost, given up, had taken from him. Anger that makes it easy to do the kinds of things that bad people pay a lot of money for.

Wes has done some terrible things in the name of survival, and as much as he's ashamed and disgusted by them he knows that if the chips are down he'll do them again. He doesn't enjoy violence, but he's too good of a bloodletter to avoid it for long.

His primary motivation is, and has been for as long as he can remember, his younger sister Ellie. Seven years her senior, Wes took up the roles of caretaker and provider when he was just a teenager and has worked himself to the bone without complaint to keep her safe. His protective streak hasn't lessened any despite the fact that she's grown and can take care of herself. He still tries to hide things from her 'for her own good', deflecting questions of 'where did you get that money?' and 'how did you break your nose?', but for the most part he's more open and honest with her than anyone else in his life.

In general, despite the streak of darkness in him, Wes is a good man at heart. He tries to do the right thing and he tries to maintain a positive and hopeful outlook on life despite the world doing everything in its power to wear him down. Just don't mess with his sister, or you won't live long enough to regret the decision.

Background:

Wesson Wyatt Rodgers has lived all his life in the Onawai district. His childhood was nothing out of the ordinary for your typical lower-class SANCTUM resident. He was raised mostly by his mother. His father was in and out of prison and after his sister Ellie was born he found himself stepping up to be the 'man of the house' earlier than anybody should have to.

By the time Wes was a teenager, his father had fallen to a prison shiv and his mother had succumbed to illness and he was left taking care of his sister on his own. He dropped out of school and began working like a dog to make ends meet. It was only natural that he'd eventually end up undertaking some criminal pursuits out of desperation when legitimate work couldn't cut it. As much as he hated the work, as awful as he felt doing it, the fact was he was good at it. He was good at busting heads and breaking kneecaps. He was good at beating payment out of people. And it made him sick.

Wes never told his sister about what he did for money. He always had a litany of excuses that he's sure she never bought, but he couldn't bear to admit the truth. By the time he turned 24 he vowed to give up the illegal stuff and earn clean. He managed to score a job working at a music store in his neighborhood and found his calling repairing, refinishing, modifying and building stringed instruments.

Still, his dream job didn't quite cut it - especially if he wanted his sister to focus on school instead of following in his footsteps. So he found other ways to earn. Odd jobs. Security. Moving furniture. Busking. Playing gigs at a nearby club. Donating blood.

That's been the way of things.

But eight months ago Wes signed up for a drug trial. It paid well and he was desperate for cash, and maybe it was a stupid move but after two months of shots and medical exams and evaluations, he didn't notice any difference and neither did the researchers. They paid him and he went on his merry way and he thought that was that.

But for the past couple weeks, Wes has been feeling... different. Gradually getting stronger. Some strange energy coursing through his veins; a pulse in his head. And yet he's also been at the mercy of random, crippling headaches and intermittent nosebleeds.

He has no idea what's going on, but he figures it has to be tied to that drug trial months ago. And to the faces he recognizes from that trial going missing or turning up dead, one by one...
